Program Content

I admit it is dorky, but one of my favorite things to do is to look at a company’s press release and predict how it will impact the company’s stock price. Many CPAs spend significant time using GAAP and preparing and auditing financial statements, but don’t fully understand how those financial statements will be viewed by investors. In part, this is because company press releases announcing quarterly earnings are usually a dozen or more pages long, and 10-K’s are often more than 100 pages – it is tough to identify the most important information. Sometimes, a company will report an increase in revenues and earnings and its stock price will decrease. Other times, a company will report a massive loss and its stock price will go up. In this engaging session, we will look at real-world company press releases to quickly identify the critical components and items which are largely ignored by investors. We will also learn how to predict the impact of a press release on a company’s stock price.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the critical components of a company’s press release
  2. Understand the importance of company provided guidance or outlook
  3. Understand how investors incorporate earnings information, guidance, and one-time items in determining how a press release impacts the value of a stock
